It should go without saying but, just in case, spoilers for Infinity War below.
The dead, alive and the in-between
Before we talk about Gamora, it’s important to have a quick recap of where everyone stands at the end of Infinity War.
The still alive
This group includes the ‘original’ Avengers like Iron Man, Captain America, Bruce Banner and Thor.
The faded away
Those snapped out of existence by Thanos. Including: all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Spider-Man.
The already dead
The heroes that died before Thanos snapped his fingers and half of the universe disappeared. This was, in order, Loki, Gamora and Vision.
It’s clear that those most likely to survive Infinity Wars 2 are those that were ‘disappeared’ in Infinity War 1. There’s just no way the MCU continues without Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
This group will be rescued, probably either from a pocket universe in the Soul Stone or through the Time Stone turning back the clock, and will be free to continue MCU’s domination of blockbuster movies. The ‘old’ Avengers will probably pass the torch by sacrificing themselves to rescue the new Avengers.
But where does this leave Gamora?
As Gamora was in the pre-dead group, and she looked pretty dead after that fall, it’s unlikely the Avengers will be able to save her in the same way they save those who vanished. But, unlike Loki and Vision, she is still too big of a character to stay dead.
We also appeared to see a younger version of her growing up in the soul stone with Thanos.
This leaves four possibilities for her status at the end of Avengers 4:
Gamora really is dead
As Zoe Saldana has already discussed filming Guardians 3 this seems unlikely. It’s possible that she does die and appears in flashbacks, but this would take the previous lighthearted Guardians into some pretty dark territory.
Although a strange part of me ships the Star Lord and the Scarlet Witch, and killing of both of their love interests could pave the way for this to happen, I really don’t see Gamora being killed off for good.
She’s released alongside the rest of the disappeared and is a-okay
The Soul Stone is weird. We know that because it randomly decided the Red Skull should be it’s protector and by all accounts has some sort of intelligence. It could be that it gives Gamora a bye and hands her back her life with no ill-effects.
Of all the options, this would cheapen her ‘death’ the most. There has to be some consequence to seeing her broken body at the bottom of a cliff. Marvel has already made every death suspect due to multiple resurrections and the unbelievability of ‘killing’ Spider-Man et-al off at the end of Infinity War.
Something has to stick or the audience will stop caring. And it can’t just be Vision and Loki. Next, they will be expecting me to care about the fate of War Machine.
While her real death is unlikely to be an option due to the practicality of killing off a core Guardian team member. A full recovery by the end of Infinity War 2 is similarly impractical because dramatically it just wouldn’t work.
It’s Gamora – but not as we know her
We see a juvenile Gamora in the Soul Stone at the end of Infinity War. Given that time probably works pretty strangely inside that pocket universe she could age to a fully grown Gamora by the end of Avengers 4.
The Gamora that is released, however, does not have to be the Gamora that died. As this Gamora was brought into existence by the sacrifice of Thanos, it could be a much darker version of Gamora. She could really be the most dangerous women in the galaxy and without any emotional ties to Star Lord. She could even be the antagonist of the next Guardians movie.
Part of the plot of Guardians 3 would then become Star Lord trying to reawaken the old Gamora or come to terms with the new one. Effectively handing them back the sexual tension that had been resolved by the end of the second movie.
Gamora is still stuck in the Soul Stone
If the rest of the Guardians have spent Infinity War 2 trapped in the Soul Stone, then it’s probable they meet Gamora in there. Or at least some form of Gamora. However, due to the different and more permanent nature of her death, it may not be possible for her to return in the same way.
In this scenario she becomes the focus of the plot for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. With Star Lord and the rest of the Guardians trying to break her free of the stone.
These are the four ways we think Gamora’s story will play out in Infinity War 2 (or whatever they decide to call it). Our favourite is option 3, but feel free to tell us yours.
