5 Things We Learned From the Iron Fist Season 2 Trailer

The first season of Danny Rand was not well received, especially by us here at Stranger Views. So it’s with trepidation that we take a look at the new trailer for season 2 to see what we can glean from it and whether or not it looks like season 2 will be better than season 1.

There may be some parallels to Luke Cage

It’s no secret that Marvel likes to plagiarise itself, and it looks like it’s happening again.

Just like Bushmaster had powers commensurate with Luke Cage, and Jessica’s mum had similar powers to her,  Davos clearly develops a iron-like fist. His glows red, but we can assume it does pretty much the same thing. This is better than in the first Luke Cage where he was so much stronger than his opponents it seemed unfair, to the point that I actually felt sorry for Cottonmouth. But it’s not as interesting as when the villain is in contrast to the protagonist.

For example, Gilgrave was fascinating because his power and his personality contrasted with Jessica Jones. He was suave, she was a drunken scrapper. Her power was physical and direct, his mental and manipulative.

In Daredevil, Kingpin was a brawler and a business man, while Daredevil a martial artist who stood up for the little man. There contrasting abilities and personalities is what made their link with the hero so powerful, and the show so interesting.

This approach is more nuanced than the Bushmaster-Cage ‘we could have been brother’s’ dynamic, which is tired and lazy. Hopefully Iron Fist doesn’t go down the same route as Luke Cage season 2, but the trailer suggests it will.

There is going to be some angst

The trailer seems to show Colleen Wing is getting on Danny’s case about why he’s so angry. If that sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s what Claire Temple spent too much of the second season of Luke Cage doing.

I get that heroes need to be conflicted about the damage they need to inflict, otherwise they would just be psychos with a cause. But I hope we don’t get too much angsting, it’s not like it made the first season better……

Family will be a strong theme (again)

Family is a common theme in Marvel. Indeed, it was the centrepiece of both Luke Cage season 2, Jessica Jones season 2 and approximately 75% of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And, despite Danny Rand being an orphan, it looks like family will be important in Season 2 of Iron Fist.  It looks like season 2 will pit Danny against his adoptive family, or at least adoptive brother, Davos.

Yellow masks look stupid

Sometimes comic book costumes look cool on TV, but this is not one of them. While I’m sure the fight scene between Davos and Danny Rand is going to be epic, wearing those ridiculous masks isn’t going to help build the drama. Are brutal fights often fancy dress?

There will be some cameos

Misty appears, so we have to assume that Luke will also rock up at some point. After all, they got so pally in Season 2 of Luke Cage it will be weird if Danny doesn’t give him a call. Who wouldn’t call a human tank if they needed a hand in a fight?

We’ve been a bit down on this trailer, which is probably unfair as it does look like it will be better than season one. It’s just that Danny Rand has managed to suck the life out his own first season, was the worst Defender, and was then one of the less interesting parts of the last season of Luke Cage. So it’s hard to get our hopes up.
